How Can I Use Digital Cameras To Save The Planet?

Posted by admin on November 29th, 2008

The issue of hazardous waste receives less attention than other environmental threats, with over 80,000 chemicals now in existence - not counting the additional 1,500 new chemicals developed on a yearly basis, with many being introduced into the industry fields. There seems to be insufficient data demonstrating the effects of every chemical out there, but what data is available shows that human health and the environment is in trouble.

The good news is, of all the environmental threats, the hazardous waste issue has the most successful solutions available to it. Scientists state that hazardous waste could be reduced about 1/3 by using the available technology and methods already present, such as using the more recently developed digital cameras.

This is because as more and more people moved away from conventional cameras for easier photography with higher quality results, they were unwittingly reducing the use of chemicals that were earlier being used to process the film. These chemicals, especially the developer and fixer solutions, had become serious environment hazards.

The United States laws have required that the “spent chemicals” should be made inert before they were disposed off in landfills. But more often than not, most film processing centers released the chemicals into the drain because of high expenditure involved in treating them before discharge. This was especially true of the smaller and locally owned companies, along with individual photographers, not only in the US but across the world.

But they were not the only ones who broke the laws, as the cruise ships in the international waters did even more damage. Routinely, developed pictures that were shot by the ship’s passengers had their the film-processing chemicals dumped ‘en route into the open ocean, since no restrictive laws applied to international waters. This plays a major part why our oceans and green reefs are dying at a rate faster than the rain forests.

Due to the development of the digital camera, incidents such as the environmental issues on cruise ships are not occurring as often. The same can be said of ponds and rivers that used to be polluted with chemicals flowing out of film processing labs, incidentally which still flow out of such labs in the third world.

Very few people take prints of the photographs today with the digital camera and have them processed in a lab, as most transfer the images into computers electronically and then print them out or send them via email. Also, used cartridges are usually recycled or dumped into landfills, very rarely finding they’re way into major water bodies.

Similarly, the scale of impact is very low when it comes to rechargeable batteries yet still there in regard to alkaline batteries. This is because most of the batteries are rechargeable and no consumer disposes them till they are full exhausted. This means that an alkaline battery may continue to be used for weeks depending on the amount of camera usage.

Also, being a solid waste it is more likely to end up in landfills than in water bodies, causing more damage to the grassland or dirt in the area. An alternative to alkaline batteries for environmental safety is the NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) battery or the Li-Ion (Lithium Ion) batteries as they are environmentally friendly. So, if you are a nature lover dump your conventional camera and get a digital camera, with safer batteries.

Does anyone know how to check a car battery??

Posted by admin on November 27th, 2008

Does anyone have a way to check your battery to see if its dead?? I dont have a battery tester. Im not sure if its my battery, or my altinator??
The car is dead, no lights come on, horn wont blow, alarm wont even come on, its totaly dead…I WANT TO KNOW IF THERES A WAY TO CHECK THE BATTERY!!!!

first of all you should wear goggles to protect your eyes if going further to check and work with a car battery!..

Acid will burn your eyes in no time!..And batteries could explode even while in car and working!…

The easiest way to check is getting those positive and negative post together for a bout 1 second and see if the spark is good enough (I mean a nice strong spark)!..

Or take it to a mechanic shop or preferably to an auto parts store to be checked!…

if taking the alternator also could be checked at the auto store for free!…Auto stores won't charge you to test or re-charge your battery!…neither the alternator check!..

if you don't have any lights then your battery is completly drained!..You should go to an autoshop and recharged it for free and it'll take about 30 minutes!…

Put it back in your car and turn it on, and if you see the "check engine" light or any other "warning" light, then your alternator most probably will be at fault!…

How to tell a lawn tractor's battery is dead?

Posted by admin on November 27th, 2008

I have a lawn tractor (Yardman riding mower) model number
13aj771g713, Serial number: 1c155b40193. I used it for two years. Last year I had to charge the battery the first time and it works fine. This year when I charge, the charger displays an error, meaning the battery is dead, or the connection is not good, according to the manual of the charger. I made sure the connection is good.

So I am wondering maybe the battery is dead? How can I make sure? I have a multitester but it only can check batteries of of 1.5v - 9v. The tracor's battery is 12v.

Bring it to an auto parts store. I know Auto-Zone does this. Most of them have a load tester that'll determine whether it's good or not. It may well read 12 volts on a meter but still not be any good. Most of the automotive parts stores will test it for free.

How long will batteries last in a baby swing?

Posted by admin on November 27th, 2008

I need to purchase my daughter a baby swing and have tried to find the ones you can plug in, but have only found two and they are not pretty. She is having a girl. Do the battery operated ones use alot of batteries?

We had to change the batteries on my son's swing about every other week. It really depends on how often you use it and how many other things it has (my son's had a mobile that spun around and birds that moved up and down, and played songs) so it took a lot. If you haven't looked yet, go to www.babiesrus.com and check out their selection.

What kind of a battery tender should I get for a 2005 Sportster 1200 Roadster?

Posted by admin on November 25th, 2008

I have been neglecting my bike this winter and meant to get a battery tender earlier but now it is spring and my battery of course is dead. What kind of a battery tender should I get?
Don't ask me for details about my bike, I love to ride but don't get into the mechanical stuff.

Go with the Battery Tender Junior. I have one and it works great, even for car batteries. If you hook it up wrong it shuts down so it can't harm your battery or blow itself up. It comes with a variety of pigtails so you don't have to take the seat or body panels off to hook it up after you install the pigtail.

What would happen if i was to use batteries with different Mah ratings?

Posted by admin on November 25th, 2008

I am planning on chaining three 3.7v batteries together to make 11.1v, two of the batteries will be 2000 Mah and one will be 800 Mah.

How would this effect the battery life compared to using three 2000 Mah batteries?

Thanks!
Yep, i meant mAh.

I understand they wouldn't last as long but, would i be limited by the weakest link in the chain? (every battery drops to 800 mAh, or the 800mAh battery will flatten before all the others)

The 800 mAh battery will discharge faster than the others. When it’s drained, the device it’s in will probably no longer run due to the voltage being too low. Also, when it’s voltage falls below the other batteries voltage it will have a reverse voltage present across it. This could damage the battery and cause it to leak and damage the device it’s in and the other batteries. It’s never a good idea to mix different battery capacities in one device or use different battery chemistry’s in one device (NiCad, NiMH, alkaline, etc.).

Environment-friendly Vehicles Showcased by Ford Motor Company

Posted by admin on November 25th, 2008

The Ford Motor Company is one of the car manufacturers committed to cleaning the air. They are doing their part in the protection of the environment by designing and producing alternative fuel vehicles. They are also a good supporter of President Bush’s proposed mandate of reducing the dependency of the country on foreign oil and reducing the amount of harmful greenhouse emissions by as much as 20 percent by the year 2017. At the recently held 2007 Washington (D.C.) Auto Show, the domestic car manufacturer has unveiled the hydrogen-fueled, battery-powered, plug-in Ford Edge.

During the unveiling of the cutting-edge alternative fuel vehicle, government officials and legislators are present. Their presence is important for the carmaker, since they can show the lawmakers what they can develop in the future and that their effort in cleaning up the environment and reducing dependency on foreign oil is quite possible. Scott Staley, the Chief Engineer for Ford’s Hybrid and Fuel Cell Technology Development, commented that: “Besides the public, the audience in Washington includes people in charge of energy and clean air policy so this is very much a showplace for exhibiting what Ford technology can do in the future”.

The Ford Edge unveiled at the Washington Auto Show was developed under contract from the US Department of Energy. This is another sign that the government is serious in their effort to help car makers in the development of clean cars. The main technology in the hydrogen electric hybrid vehicle is the HySeries Drive. The system uses the hydrogen fuel cell to recharge the 336-volt lithium-ion battery pack. The Ford Edge hybrid uses the battery for the first 25 miles of operation, with a top speed of 85 miles per hour. Once the system detects that the battery has lost as much as 40 percent of its charge, the fuel cell then takes on the job of powering the car. While the vehicle runs on the fuel cell, the battery is being charged for future use.

The capability of the system to shift from battery to fuel cell power allows the Ford Edge to travel as far as 225 miles on a full charge. In terms of MPG rating, the equivalent rating of the Ford Edge hybrid is 41 miles per gallon. Aside from the fact that the battery can be charge using the fuel cell as it powers the vehicle, the Ford Edge is also a plug-in car. This means that its battery can be charged using a standard household electrical outlet.

The Ford Edge is one of a kind in the sense that most hybrid electric vehicles use an electric motor powered by a battery pack to complement an internal combustion engine. This means that these vehicles, like the Toyota Prius, also make use of gasoline although in significantly lower amounts. In contrast, the Ford Edge hybrid uses fuel cell to complement the use of battery power to drive the vehicle. Aside from the capability of the Ford Edge hydrogen electric hybrid to use alternative fuels, it is also made out of reliable parts, as reliable and as tough as Volvo 850 parts.

The Ford Motor Company continues their dedication to producing environmentally-friendly vehicles. The domestic car maker is the first to develop, produce, and introduce to the public an SUV hybrid. The Ford Escape hybrid was released in 2004 to give their consumers good fuel economy without sacrificing the looks and capabilities of a sports utility vehicle. The Ford Escape Hybrid remains to this day one of the cleanest and most fuel efficient small sports utility vehicle in the market today along with the Mercury Mariner.

Essentials For Hurricane Season

Posted by admin on November 25th, 2008

According to the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration,
the East Pacific expects 15 to 16 tropical storms. Nine of these
end up becoming hurricanes with five becoming deadly major
hurricanes. If you live in the southeastern part of the U.S.
then you know that hurricane season started on June 1st. Are you
prepared for Hurricane season? Did you know that Hurricane
season lasts until the end of November? Have you gone out and
bought all the supplies that you may need? This article is
written to help you prepare for any kind of hurricane. It will
also provide you with a list of items that are essential for any
storm.

What do you need to do in order to prepare for a hurricane? If
you live near the coastline, and a hurricane with deadly winds
is going to make landfall, then you might consider evacuating
and going to a shelter. You need to keep watching the news to
see if the state has declared a state of emergency. If you are
in the path of a land-falling hurricane, then you should prepare
and have a list of supplies ready. List of supplies include: a
first aid kit with all the necessary medications, canned food
and an opener, plenty of water to last for at least 3 days,
flashlights, a battery powered radio and extra batteries. Other
supplies may include sandbags, tape, generator, raingear,
sleeping bags and lastly protective clothing. In order for one
to be on the safe side, you should prepare for the worst and
hope for the best. No one knows how deadly and destructive these
hurricane winds are going to be. Therefore, you should have all
your supplies next to you. According to Hurricanetips.com,
folding beach chairs make an excellent alternative to cots.
“They fold flat, double as a chair and allow you to store 16
gallon plastic storage tubs underneath to save space and secure
your belongings.” (www.hurricanetips.com) It is really important
that you prepare a checklist of items that you will need. It is
also important that you have a course of action ready along with
important phone numbers that you might need in case of an
emergency. Run through the checklist and make sure you have all
your items gathered. Once all your items are gathered, make sure
you have them put in a container that is small and portable.
This way if you are forced to leave your home, then all you have
to do is take your container with you. Now if you are forced to
leave your home, you will need something to sleep on. Folding
beach chairs make a good choice because they are light, they
fold fast for easy storage and lastly they are easily
transported. According to the Red Cross, shelters will usually
allow you to keep anything that will fit in 18 square feet,
slightly larger than the space for each beach chair.
(www.redcross.com) Beach chairs make a great choice for storms
that might require you to leave your home.

Another great item, are these new flashlights being sold over
the Internet. Every year (hurricane season) people rush to Home
Depot and Lowes to buy flashlights and batteries just in case
the storm knocks out power lines causing a power outage for
days. This way they are prepared. Who knows how long it will
take for Utility companies to restore power? Why spend money on
buying batteries and replacing bulbs when you can buy these new
flashlights that work without batteries or the need to replace
bulbs? You pick up one flashlight and your done. The flashlight
will last you forever. These new and innovative flashlights are
just what you need for hurricanes and other storms. They are
really cheap and compact. Should you lose power, these
flashlights will provide you with a guaranteed source of light.
And the best thing about these flashlights is that they are
stylish and light to carry. These new flashlights are the
shaking flashlights and the hand crank flashlights.

The shaking flashlights have an electric conductor that moves
through some magnetic field, to generate electric current. All
you need to do is shake the flashlight and electricity is
generated. The light that is produced is very visible allowing
you to see for a far distance. The hand crank flashlights are
just as easy as the shaking flashlights. All you need to do is
crank the flashlight for seconds and you will get a bright and
visible source of light. These new and innovative flashlights
are a far more, better choice than regular flashlights. These
flashlights will save you the hassle of running out to the
stores and looking to spend a lot of money on replacing
batteries and bulbs. Eliminate the need to replace your bulbs or
batteries. Another great product to keep around for hurricanes
is the hand crank flashlight with a radio. This flashlight just
like I mentioned above needs no batteries. Minutes of cranking,
provides you with a source of light. And the best thing about
this product is that it has a built in radio that has great
reception. So if you are indoors and you lose power during a
hurricane, you can still listen to the radio for the latest
weather updates. All these products mentioned above are great
for hurricane season.

Once these hurricanes make landfall, they can be really deadly.
The heavy rains, strong winds and gigantic waves can damage
buildings, trees and cars. They will even knock down power
lines, leaving you without power for days. A good example would
be the state of Florida last year. Hurricane Charley, Frances,
Ivan and Jeanne brought destructive winds and rain that knocked
down power lines leaving most of the state without power for
days. People rushed to the stores for flashlights, batteries,
generators and anything they could find. It was too late and
people were on top of each other fighting for what was left in
these stores. Hurricanes cannot be controlled but our
vulnerability can be reduced through preparedness. Be prepared
for this year! These new flashlights and the beach chairs
mentioned can be found at Coconutz Home and Garden. All you have
to do is visit the website and see for yourself. Should you be
interested in any of our products mentioned above, please enter
the code “Hurricane” when prompted at check out, and you will
receive 10% off of any of our products. A link for the web store
has been attached at the end of this article. Get your supplies
