What kind of batteries to use for a solar panel?

I am planning to buy some solar panels for my cabin and i want to be able to store the electricity. what kind of batteries should i get? i will be running simple things like a tv and radio. where can i buy these batteries? where should i look for the best batteries?

If you will be storing them outdoors, you can use auto batteries. Indoors, use sealed marine batteries.

Number and size depends on your needs. You will need a charge controller between the solar panels and the batteries to get the maximum power out of the array and to avoid damage to the batteries.

And you will need an inverter to convert the 12 or 24 volts to 120 or 240 VAC.

One large lead acid battery will supply about 1000 watt-hours of energy, enough for 200 watts for 5 hours. You have to look at your loads and decide on how many batteries you need.

Frequently it is cheaper to buy new appliances that use less power, as that power difference can save a lot of money in batteries, inverter, charge controller and solar panels. But it sounds like a few thousand watt-hours will be enough, 1 or 2 large batteries. The real limiting factor is how much money you want to spend for the solar panels themselves.

Do you remember that time when you were expecting an important phone call or that SMS from your friend. Or you are stuck in traffic and try to browse the internet .. and you phone screen shows the Low Battery Sign. Damn irritating isn’t it?

Well I myself end up on a low battery on my phone and curse myself when the phone switches off ..

We all charge our mobile phones daily or once in a couple of days .. Well that is the battery life of most phones in the market. Sometimes you mightforget to charge your mobile phones and you might not have access to a charger.

I wrote this Guide so that you can Survive on Low Battery for a longer duration.. Your phone would eventually die due to lack of power but some tips to help you squeeze that last electron from the Lithium Ion Cell ..

1.Dont Use Vibrator/Silent Mode choose Meeting mode instead

The Vibrator on the phone is nothing but a motor .. you are going to be consumer more power using it ..
Meeting mode on that other hand consumes less power as it just displays the alert and a small beep.

2.Reduce Display Brightness

Many phones give you the ability to change this setting .. Set it at the lowest possible value ..

3.Dont use Speakerphone

Avoid using Speakerphone /Handsfree as they tend to consume more power ..

4.Close Unwanted Applications

More apps means more processor activity .. what app do you want to use when you can barely make a call or send a message .. act wisely

5.Stop the Music

Music via the ear phones or via speaker is a battery drainer .. Even earphones is fine .. Speakers are a absolute No in times of crisis ..

6.Camera and Video Recording

Don’t turn on the Cam unless you want to kill the battery instantly ! if you have flash then its worse ..

7.Turn off Wi-Fi Bluetooth and Infrared

These 3 are one the fastest routes to empty your battery … Refrain from using them .. If you need to use a Bluetooth Headset .. opt for a corded headset instead .

8. Turn Off when there is Poor Network Coverage / Roaming

If you keep searching for a Network when coverage is poor you are constantly draining your battery ..
Better turn of your phone or put it in Offline/Airplane Mode (new phones have this feature)
When you are travelling and are on Roaming .. you might drain battery faster ..
I saw it happen on a Train journey recently ..

9.Avoid calls from Moving Vehicles

Make calls when the Vehicle comes to a halt .. When youre moving your cellphone keeps switching towers .. so it might consume some extra power ..

10.Avoid playing games

Mobile Gaming is fun but its also drains the battery .. Games like snake are fine .. But if you’re playing NGage games on a low battery ..the fun might not last long ..

11.Close and Avoid unwanted Data Connections

if you have configured to download emails every 10 mins then disable it ..
Data connections such as GPRS and EDGE which are used while browsing or downloading use the Modem in the phone which is power hungry ..

12.Talk Less Message more

Keep your calls short .. and if needed convey the information via SMS ..

13.Lower Ringtone volumes or best .. mute it

Most users have the ringtone volume as maximum and the ringtone is so loud ..
This in turn consumes for power .. Keep your ringing volume and all alert tones at 1 or below ..

14.Switch off and turn on after few hours

This is not magic .. When your phone is ON , is consumes power and in turn drains the battery .. When you turn if OFF then the power is not drained rapidly .. note that most phones have a standby time and this tip will work only for short periods of inactivity ..

15.Other Options

Well if nothing above works for you , the you can try one of the options below .

  • Carry a spare extra battery so that you can swap them when needed .
  • Some public places might have a Charging Station like at Railway stations and Airports .. be careful at such places and dont leave your phone unattended .
  • Carry another phone ( But remember to charge it ) :-)
  • The best possible way to make the most out your mobile phone battery is by charging it regularly before it drains completely . Also carry a charger with you if you are travelling.

Uninterruptible Power Supply - External Battery Testing

Batteries provide the lifeblood of most uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and power protection solutions (some are powered by flywheel energy storage devices but most contain batteries). They provide protected loads with continuous energy in the event of a mains failure, which will support loads whilst a generator or alternative power source starts up or provide enough time to gracefully shut down equipment or ride through short duration power cuts.

Often, external battery ‘strings’ or ‘sets’ (a collection of additional UPS batteries, in blocks, providing extended runtime – runtime over and above that supported by the UPS’s own internal battery) constitute a large part of an uninterruptible power supply. A whole battery string, however, is only as good as its weakest battery. It is, therefore, imperative to regularly test UPS batteries and battery strings for ‘weak links’, which should be immediately replaced – even if they have not quite fulfilled their design life, which for UPS batteries is five to ten years.

There are various methods for electrically testing UPS batteries:

  • Automatic battery set testing (by the UPS itself).
  • Load bank discharge testing or battery set, string and individual cell testing.
  • Electro-chemical testing.

Many uninterruptible power supplies are designed to test their batteries every 24 hours and will sound an audible alarm if a battery fault or condition is detected. How it works is that the test places a load on the battery set and the discharge performance is monitored. This is a basic type of test, however, and cannot be relied upon to give detail - other than an overall indication of the state of a battery set. Battery sets usually age uniformly but individual blocks of batteries can fail earlier than others and be rendered unable to sustain a reasonable level of charge, which can bring the whole set down under load conditions.

A more accurate and reliable way to test batteries or battery sets is to use a load bank, which places a load on the set from which measurements can be taken intermittently to assess its discharge performance. But even this has its limitations. The disadvantages of load bank testing are that it reduces resilience whilst the system is being tested, which for critical applications like hospitals or financial processing is unacceptable.

For large battery sets, individual block testing is much more reliable and need not take up additional man-hours as it can be incorporated into a routine maintenance visit. It should include a visual inspection to check that battery casings are not damaged or showing signs of aging such as buckling and emission of electrolyte discharge, which can sometimes be seen around terminals and valves.

Sulphating Batteries:

Because UPS batteries employ an electro-chemical process, they can deteriorate over time (months and even years). When batteries sulphate, Lead Sulphate crystals form within their electrolyte and at plate terminals, which will reduce charging performance and prevent normal operation. They can be recovered from this state (if caught early and their degree of sulphation is not great) by being charged at a higher current for around 12 hours. But care must the taken as this process itself can generate heat. If the battery does not recover through this means, it must be immediately removed and disposed of (by a licensed engineer) and replaced.

Impedance Testing:

Impedance testing can identify battery blocks that are about the fail. As batteries age, internal resistance (restriction to the flow of ions between the positive and negative plates) increases. Impedance testing consists of applying an ac voltage, suitable for the Ah size of battery, through probes attached to the battery block terminals. Impedance (in milliohms) is measured and recorded and compared to published data from manufacturers and/or previous recordings.

Electro-Chemical Testing:

Electro-chemical testing relies on measuring the frequency response to voltage and current signals passed into the battery using probes placed on the positive and negative terminals.

Electro-chemical testing is a non-invasive method that uses the principle of Frequency Response Analysis (FRA) to compare measured data to algorithms of known battery conditions, specifically sulphate and electrolyte dry-out. This problem is the principle cause of UPS battery failure and poor performance. Although originally only available in laboratories, electro-chemical testing can now be applied to uninterruptible power supply batteries using a specially designed, portable hand-held testing unit.

As batteries are so important to an uninterruptible power supply and monitoring and testing them relatively quick and easy, care must be taken to ensure it is done with precise regularity to ensure reliability of power protection solutions.
