must all batteries in a truck be grounded to it?
batteries December 26th, 2008how do i solve this problem? i want to put a couple deep cycle batteries in truck for microwave and accessories. i dont want surges in this accessorial circuit to blow out my truck's ecm. do i have to ground theses added batteries to my truck? can i just power my inverter with the red and the black leads from these added batteries and not connect them electrically to the trucks frame? how do i make a safe accessorial circuit with auxilliary batteries that works but does not affect the truck's electrical?
the deep cycles have a separate generator to charge them.
With a totally separate charging system for the new Auxiliary batteries they do not have to be connected to the factory cranking batteries. Just run both the positive and negative from the batteries to the Aux generator and cables from the aux batteries to the inverter. But inverters require a chassis ground from the case of the inverter to ground to prevent shock hazards since you will not be using the trucks chassis as ground you will need to make sure you run a 10 gauge wire from the inverter case to the new Aux batteries.

They really should be grounded. But it doesn't have to be to the frame. Just run a short lead from the NEG post to any metal that is a part of the truck.

your house bank can be wired independently of the vehicle's electrical system, just make sure it's all independent. I mean, don't try to charge your deepcycles with the vehicle alternator, without doing a bit more research & planning.

All your addons will work off the leads of the new batteries without grounding them to the truck frame but those batteries will have to be charged with another source or by jumper cables from the truck charging system when needed.
