dead battery can i tell if i got a dead cell with a battery tester?

Charge the battery for 6 to 10 hours.
Check each cell, if one cell is bad it will have a noticeably different specific gravity from all the others.
Or just check it with a volt meter after charging it and letting it rest for 5 minutes if the voltage is below 12.6 ( usually it will be down around 11 to 11.5 ) if it has a shorted cell. A fully charged and properly functioning battery will read around 13 volts five minutes after a 10 hour charge.

You can take the battery to an auto parts store such as NAPA, and they will test the battery for free. The only other way I know of is to charge the battery and use a volt meter to see what voltage the battery is operating at. If a cell is dead, it will operate at less than 12 volts.
