My battery keeps draining because of my subs and causes start up to lag what should I do?
battery June 5th, 2010I have 2 12" Kicker Comps with a Kicker 500 Watt Mono Amp. My battery drains and makes my start up on my truck lag and i have to give it gas in order for it to start up. Should I get another battery, alternator, or better battery like a optima. I have a duralast yellow top right now.
That setup should not be draining your battery that much, i would check for shorts somewhere. Also, if the battery is old i would replace it before doing something more expensive like changing your alternator. Take the battery to you local auto parts store, they will tell you if its still good.

Is the amp live when the ignition is OFF ?? If not, the amp is only like 50 amps draw max, and shouldn’t really tax a decent electrical system…. Now, if you’re running the system with the engine OFF, that will drain your battery quickly. Something isn’t right…. How about going to a garage and see if they can test your charging system……

buy a multimeter and learn how to use it, when the car is off expect 12.5 v. after the truck has been driven a while and at the battery with it running you should get around 14.0v
if the battery seems fine check the batteries ground and the wire to the starter, the starter it’s self could be suspect too and make sure all connections are clean and tight.
a healthy battery and charging system should handle that amp just fine so all so consider other problems you should not have to give it gas for it to start if the battery is fine.
you can get multimeters for less then 20.00 i think this one is best for that price but you need one.
