Why does my battery die when I start my car?
battery October 28th, 2008I have a 2000 nissan sentra. When I start it for the first time everyday it putters and kinda jumps and then the battery dies. After I restart it, it putters for a few seconds and drives really slow. The battery usually doesnt die a second time and after I start going the car runs fine. Its been doind this for about 3 months and seems to be getting worse. The battery is less than 6 months old. Any ideas what it could be? I dont really have the money to take it to a professional right now.
if its only in the morning that this happens then it could be that you're not warming your car up enough before trying to drive, that can cause splutters as well as a slightly louder engine noise

If the battery was dead it wouldn't restart. Maybe try a fuel system cleaner.

If you are starting it and the engine stalls, it is not the battery. If you are able to start it again after it stalls, it's not the battery.
It sounds like the car just keeps stalling but the battery is able to try and start it again.
The stalling problem need to be traced back to either a fuel intake problem or an electrical ignition problem.
Tell us more about the way it runs after it finally gets going.

I had a 98 sentra, and at one point I had to have something replaced in the fuel line. You should take it in to a nissan dealer to have it checked out before you end up stuck somewhere with a car that doesn't start at all.

Could be Marie, if it runs fine after running a minute that there is what some people call a dead short or a power drainage when the car is not running. Is it worse if you do not run it for 2 or 3 days? does it require jumping if longer than one day? I sent a note to my nephew who is a certified master mechanic. write to me personally if you have more precise info. Ron

if the battery dies it could be the alternator. maybe power is touching ground. id take it to a mechanic, try a couple that way you dont get gipped
